Italian PM backs EU leaders loaning USD105B to Ukraine

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed relief on Friday that “common sense prevailed” following the European Union’s agreement to extend a €90 billion ($105 billion) loan to Ukraine, covering the country’s financial needs for 2026 and 2027.

Meloni told reporters that she was pleased that the EU was able to secure the necessary funds “with a solution that has a solid legal and financial basis.”

The EU Council reached the decision after weeks of intense negotiations, opting to finance Ukraine through borrowing on capital markets. The move followed member states’ inability to reach consensus on directly using frozen Russian assets to support Kyiv, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
