Seven NATO Nations Rally Against U.S. Greenland Annexation Push

(MENAFN) Seven NATO member states have joined Denmark in issuing a unified declaration defending Greenland's sovereignty, demanding adherence to "sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders" following escalating American pressure to seize the Arctic territory.

"Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland," declared leaders from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK in their joint statement.

The coalition emphasized Arctic security as a "key priority for Europe," highlighting expanded European military presence and financial commitments to regional stability.

"Security in the Arctic must therefore be achieved collectively, in conjunction with NATO allies including the United States, by upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders. These are universal principles, and we will not stop defending them," the leaders stressed.

The statement acknowledged America's role as an "essential partner in this endeavour, as a NATO ally and through the defence agreement between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States of 1951."

US President Donald Trump has persistently voiced intentions to acquire Greenland, the self-governing Danish territory, refusing to exclude military intervention as an option.

Following Washington's military operation in Venezuela that resulted in President Nicolas Maduro's capture, Trump on Sunday intensified demands for Greenland annexation, citing American security imperatives.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called on Trump to "stop the threats."

Multiple European nations and the EU expressed firm backing for Denmark and Greenland on Monday, dismissing any notion that external forces could determine the island's destiny while reinforcing principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
